In the world of dreams, there exists no limit, no boundary;
for as long as I dream, I shall paint.
- Jose

On the arid plains of Mexico, a small boy traces the contour of billowing clouds with wonder and fascination. His delicate hand sketches the sky before able to wield a pencil, revealing that Jose Charles had been gifted with artistic perception. Encouraged to pursue his newfound craft, a childhood of countless drawings followed, subjects rendered from his surroundings, his imagination, and most profoundly, his dreams. Of greatest influence was the majestic heritage of his homeland, the pride of which would travel with him as the family relocated to California's historic Napa Valley. His evolution as a young artist would dramatically change however, upon introduction to brush and canvas. An entire new world of hue, shade and composition unfolded, a thrilling discovery where uncharted paths of expression waited to be explored.

Fueled with inexhaustible enthusiasm, Jose focused on developing his talents through diverse experimentation of method, style and medium. Along with broadening his range came studies of the classic masters, most notably Michaelangelo and Da Vinci. As his palette of knowledge and technique expanded, a deep love of the ancient Aztec and Mayan cultures grew within. The inspiration of their enlightened civilizations, coupled with his own rich ancestry, would become a constant companion in his lifelong journey as an artist.

As the years have passed, Jose's portfolio has matured with a style that is uniquely his own. As it has flourished, so too has his extraordinary ability of dream capture. Possessing a recall of vivid detail, Jose is able to consistently draw upon this abundant source of infinite creative possibility. The unrestrained experiences, emotions and color generated by the subconscious are evident in his abstract, surreal and fantasy pieces, where such bold representation is not limited by rule or reality.

Jose Charles is now a prominent figure in Napa's Hispanic art community. His paintings have been exhibited in dozens of shows, several of which were solo productions. A few of his most enduring pieces are immortalized as co-collaborated public murals. Gracing the downtown County Building is his work honoring Ceasar Chavez and Hispanic history in Napa Valley; while Calistoga's Elementary School depicts a celebration of California history, a project created in conjunction with attending children. Jose was the featured artist in the November 2004 issue of Napa Valley Life, and continues to be actively involved with the Artists Progressive League and Hispanic Artists of Napa Valley. Though a seasoned pioneer, his youthful enthusiasm had never waned, and his tireless dedication has helped transcend barriers for fellow Latino artists.

Jose's studio is located at the foot of Napa's spectacular wine country, where he resides with his other great passion, that of his wife Gina, and children Tony & Vanessa.
